Lonely dark home office versus lively sunny co-working space

Breaking Free: My Escape from Home Office Blues

From Homebound to Hive: My Co-Working Adventure Begins

A good chunk of my university life was spent working from my bedroom. It all kicked off with the whole COVID-19 thing, which forced us all indoors. 🏠🛌 Then, after coming back from a student exchange, I felt a bit out of place with my old friends and with a train ride to uni that took over an hour each way 🚆, I found myself sticking to home more often. Even when I started interning and freelancing while still in school, everything was done from my home setup.

But after being cooped up for so long, I decided to give co-working spaces a go, and honestly, it changed everything for me. 🚀 In this post, I want to share what I’ve learned about the ups and downs of working from home versus diving into the buzz of a co-working space. 📈

Connect & Chat ☕

We all need to socialize, though the amount varies from person to person. I’ve always considered myself quite adaptable, capable of handling extended periods of solitude. However, I must admit, I missed the buzz of human interaction when working from home. There’s something uplifting about grabbing a coffee with colleagues and engaging in casual conversation. It genuinely brightens the day.

As you begin to focus more on your career, you may find yourself in a peculiar situation. You’re spending less time with old friends as your interests evolve, yet you haven’t quite found your new social circle. This can feel like being in limbo. Here’s where co-working spaces truly excel—they can significantly accelerate this transition. By venturing out, you’ll encounter a diverse array of fascinating individuals. Before long, you’ll find yourself part of a new community where you can share your current passions and interests.

Linking Up: Opportunities in Every Corner 🌐

One of the biggest perks for me has been how much it’s helped my freelancing career take off. When I first walked into a co-working space, I was just starting out with only one major client for about eight months. But then, things started to click. I picked up a small job offer almost immediately, and of course, I jumped on it.

Then there was this startup I started chatting with, just out of curiosity. Turned out, what they needed was exactly what I could offer, and I pitched them a deal. Now, it’s been four months, and we’re still collaborating. That’s the magic of a co-working space; it’s like a live LinkedIn, but way more personal and immediate.

Zone In: The Power of a Professional Environment 🎯

Working from home had this one big downside for me: self-sabotage. It was too easy to just flip over to YouTube or dive into some silly internet rabbit hole. The cost was so low, I’d find myself doing it on autopilot. If you haven’t checked out “Deep Work”, I highly recommend it - it explains why these tiny distractions can tank your productivity like nothing else.

In a co-working space, though, the dynamics change. I’d feel pretty silly if someone caught me scrolling through cat memes, and somehow, that social accountability keeps me in check. Plus, working in the same spot day in, day out, does something weird but good to your brain. It creates habits and enhances memory recall (check out Context-Dependent Memory and Habits if you’re curious why).

Wisdom in the Wild: Finding Mentors in a Shared Space 🧑‍🏫

One of the coolest things about being in a co-working space is you bump into all sorts of interesting folks. Some of these people are exactly where you hope to be down the line. They can end up being your informal mentors just through day-to-day chats. They’ll point out the rookie mistakes to dodge and the shortcuts to take, which I think is one of the top reasons to join a co-working space. In a short amount of time, I’ve met incredible people, had eye-opening conversations, and picked up insights that I’m taking with me for the long haul.

Worth Every Penny: My Co-Working Verdict 🏢

Certainly, co-working spaces come with their drawbacks. The cost can be a significant factor; for instance, I currently pay €330/month excluding VAT, which might seem steep for some. 💸 Additionally, if you’re someone who thrives in a quiet, distraction-free environment, the dynamic and sometimes noisy atmosphere of a co-working space could detract from your productivity. 🔇

However, for me, the investment has been worthwhile. The benefits I’ve experienced, from networking opportunities to a more structured workday, have made every cent spent on my desk feel like money well spent. 💼 The sense of community, the chance encounters that lead to business opportunities, and the overall boost in motivation and creativity have more than justified the expense. 🤝💡 So, while it’s not perfect for everyone, for those like myself who find value in these aspects, co-working spaces are indeed a great investment 😄

…And finally, a huge shoutout to Impact Hub Dresden. Their vibrant community and top-notch facilities have been a game-changer, providing not just a place to work but a space that has significantly enriched my professional journey. The networking and the overall atmosphere have been instrumental in shaping my freelance career. Thanks for being the perfect co-working home away from home!
